Durable Dental Sealants for All Ages
What are Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, transparent protective coatings applied to the molars and premolars. Their primary purpose is to prevent cavities and staining that could develop without their protection. The great thing about sealants is that they are suitable for both children and adults. Typically, sealants can last up to three years before they gradually wear off.
Why might you benefit from Sealants?
You may find sealants beneficial because the grooves, deep fissures, and pits on your back teeth can make them challenging to clean thoroughly. Over time, these areas can also become discolored and are more prone to decay. Sealants can provide protection for both children and adults by sealing these vulnerable spots.
What makes a person a candidate for Sealants?
Through a comprehensive evaluation, we can assess whether sealants are suitable for you. These protective coatings are beneficial for patients of all ages, but we particularly recommend them for our younger patients who might not have mastered proper brushing and flossing techniques. If you have existing sealants that need replacing, we can easily update them at your convenience in our office. Typically, sealants will naturally wear off within one to three years after they are applied.
What happens during the Sealant procedure?
The sealant application process is quick and straightforward, typically completed in just a few minutes at our office. We begin by cleaning and drying the back teeth thoroughly. Next, a clear liquid varnish is applied exclusively to the chewing surfaces of these teeth. Afterward, the sealants are dried and hardened using a bright light. This procedure is repeated for any additional back teeth requiring this protective layer. It’s essential to continue your regular brushing and flossing routine, as sealants do not cover the front teeth or the spaces between the back teeth once they are applied.
